‘Amazing Fantasy #3’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by Kaare Andrews
Published by Marvel Comics

Gut punch.

There is no other way to describe what transpired in Issue #3 of Amazing Fantasy. In this chapter titled “Choices”, each of our major characters are introduced to a rough reveal that has terrible consequences.

With a few exceptions, the charm and wonder of the previous issues is replaced with acts of war. The battles that play out have grave results.

Now, if you prefer your storylines to have high stakes, you probably will enjoy this latest entry. There is a lot of action. Sometimes it is hard to decipher which of our heroes are fighting for the right factions.

It gets complicated.

War is like that.

Writer Kaare Andrews intentionally does not spell out how and why alliances are made. Just a shade more clarity would have made a good chapter into a great chapter.

Thankfully, the tone to the entry remains consistent. Andrews continues to pull all the stops on his illustrations. The world he is building is grand and lush. The cover art is reminiscent of a Barbarella movie poster.

The stakes continue to increase for Captain America, The Black Widow and Spider-Man. Their survival is not guaranteed.

The earlier issues were staged better, but passing over on this pivotal chapter is not an option.

The story as a whole continues to receive high marks.
