‘Fantastic Four: Life Story #2’ (review)

Written by Mark Russell
Art by Sean Izaakse
Published by Marvel Comics

Writer Mark Russell does a heck of a writing job here with this title. This Life Story could have easily been seen as a ripoff of the Spider-Man one. Russell makes it anything but that. This is a smart story with rich and solid characters that really jump off the page.

Each issue takes place in a new decade.

The last issue was set in the 1960’s and so it is that this issue takes place in the 1970’s. Automatically we see how artist Sean Izaakse handles that time change and he does a great job. The passage of time here is well handled artistically.

The Fantastic Four members are all struggling to find their identities as this issue begins.

Even Reed Richards feels a bit like an outcast. We get to see how each of them handle it. Each of them have an interesting dilemma and each of them are trying to cope the best that they can.

Susan Storm is focused on social issues.

This puts her at odds with her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm.

Meanwhile, Reed is prepping for the coming of Galactus and what that might mean for the planet Earth.

It is all handled with humor and great dialogue. Russell is only getting better as a writer and it shows. The art by Izaakse is perfect and shows us new aspects of these age old characters. This is the best Fantastic Four book in twenty five years.

Maybe more.

It really is that good.

RATING: A
