‘Superman #31’ (review)

Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Sean Lewis
Art by Scott Godlewski, Sami Basri
Published by DC Comics

Phillip Kennedy Johnson continues his run on the Superman titles with this book. It is truly excellent what he is doing, I have to say. His run really has made me anxiously awaiting each issue and I just love the direction we are headed in.

The Shadowbreed has returned to cause havoc. They were thought to have been destroyed a long time ago by Superman and a few other heroes. Yet, they are back and they seem deadlier than ever before. We get to see a bit of the horror they bring with them as this issue begins.

They also have in their tanks someone Superman has had dealings with. While all of this is going on, Jon Kent is with the Thakkramite leader to see if they can both find the key that will lead to the destruction of these creatures.

If not, the universe could be doomed.

This main story is pretty great. The writing and art is very good. We get to see Superman return to the place where he first fought the Shadowbreed. He is trying to learn the most he can from that encounter before he goes up against them again. Will he survive it?

In the back up story, we get to see Jimmy Olsen trying to build a back up team for Superman. It doesn’t go as planned. This was a pretty entertaining story. Sean Lewis writes a great script and Sami Basri does a quality job with the art.

All in all, this is another fine issue of this title.

RATING: A
