‘Fantastic Four: Life Story #1’ (review)

Written by Mark Russell
Art by Sean Isaakse
Published by Marvel Comics

I was truly excited when I heard that this book was coming out.

There hasn’t been a good Fantastic Four book in quite a long time for me. This one looked quite interesting and it had a good creative team. I wasn’t at all disappointed as this book was pretty damn great.

This book starts off in the 1960’s.

Like the previous Life Story starring Spider-Man, events unfold in real time, with each issue representing a decade.

So, we get to see the various members of the Fantastic Four meeting for the first time. Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm all meet each other and the stage is set.

They all go up in rocket. They have an unfortunate accident that has them imbued with cosmic rays.

From there, as usual, they all attain powers that they never thought was possible. The setup is the usual story for these characters for sure.

The execution is anything but.

We get to see the usual story but reflected into actual events. The 1960’s were a strange place in America and we get to see what life might have been like with these characters in it. The book takes us to some truly interesting places.

Mark Russell writes an amazing script as usual. I never would have thought he would be a writer on the Fantastic Four but here we are and his work here is quite excellent. Sean Isaakse is the perfect artist for this as well. He gives the team a fresh look.

This whole book is great and I am excited to see where this goes.

RATING: A
