‘Spider-Man: The Spider’s Shadow #1’ (review)

Written by Chip Zdarksy
Art by Pasqual Ferry
Published by Marvel Comics

I love the way Chip Zdarsky writes Spider-Man!

Life Story was one of the best Spider-Man tales in recent years. So of course I was excited when I heard that this was coming down the line. I wasn’t disappointed either as this is one of the best comics Marvel has put out this year.

The premise behind this book is more in lines of the old “What If?” comic books.

Basically, this book asks “What if Peter Parker became Venom?”

Instead of trying to get rid of the symbiote, Peter Parker decides to give into it. This changes the timeline more than you can imagine.

The Hobgoblin from that era attacks! Peter goes out to fight him. But this is a different fight than normal. Peter does something that you never thought that he could do. The Hobgoblin suffers a fate that I never saw coming.

What does this mean for Peter though?

Well, he definitely changes his rules here. But what are the long term effects going to be? And even more so, what does the rest of Peter’s universe think about what is going on with him?

The story is pretty damn great.

Zdarksy writes an unbelievable tale and this take on the classic story is absolutely brilliant. The art by Pasqual Ferry is wonderful. I love where this is going. It is a dark story for sure but it is endlessly entertaining.

RATING: A
