‘Project Patron #1’ (review)

Written by Steve Orlando
Art by Patrick Piazzalunga
Published by Aftershock Comics

Aftershock Comics really puts out some of the more interesting comic books in the market. So, when they come out with a new comic book series, I definitely sit up and pay attention. This book is such a book. It is well done. It is also written by the amazing Steve Orlando so that is always a cause for celebration.

The story starts out by telling us about about the superhero called the Patron.

We get to see him in a flashback from thirty years ago.

He is fighting an alien race called the Woe. We learn that this is the alien race that destroyed the dinosaurs.

Well, they are back now and they look to do the same to humanity.

We get to see that final battle where the Patron loses his life alongside the Woe.

Or did they both die?

Apparently, the people of Earth don’t want that to be the case. So, much like Mobile Suit Gundam, a team is put into place to pilot a Reploid to pretend that the Patron is still around.

The book shows us the team and the terms that they have trained under. It shows the sacrifices of that team, and what it means to work for the cause. It is much more brutal than I could have imagined.

By the end of the first issue, we get the full scope of exactly what is going on. And it is pretty damn exciting.

Orlando writes a great script. It takes a lot of things that we have seen before in modern culture and sort of slams them together. The artwork here by Peter Piazzalunga is absolutely fantastic. This guy is great and the artwork is out of this world. I expect great things from his career, judging by this first issue.

A fantastic book all around.

RATING: A
