‘Orphan and the Five Beasts #2’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by James Stokoe
Published by Dark Horse Comics

Every time that I read a comic book done by James Stokoe, it is like a shot of adrenaline into my body.

The comic books are fast and fun and full of an energy and are unlike any other comic book out there. This book is another great example of that and it is pretty wild indeed.

Orphan Mo is a foundling who has been abandoned by her parents.

She is raised by a wizard who teaches her five deadly disciplines.

As he lay dying, the wizard revealed that there are five deadly former students that have taken over everything. Orphan Mo is tasked to stop them.

We get to see Orphan on that journey as this second book opens. She is on the journey to find the deadly bandit who is one of the former students. He has the valley under his control with his “Two Trees Bearing Heaven” fighting style.

He also has indestructible legs.

A lot of this book happens really fast and that is okay by me. Stokoe seems very interested in getting to the fighting scenes so why not? When it happens, the fighting scene is unlike anything else I have seen in modern comics. The fights are immaculately staged and full of intense verve.

Stokoe’s book moves at a quick clip like most of his work. The writing is sparse and the is art full of motion. And it is pretty damn great.

This comic is unlike anything out there and I am happy for that. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

RATING: A
