‘Hellblazer: Rise and Fall #3’ (review)

Written by Tom Taylor
Art by Darick Robertson
Published by DC Comics

I have to say that I have very much enjoyed this version of John Constantine.

I generally like anything that writer Tom Taylor does and this is no exception. He has a different but strong take on the character and really cuts loose, especially with this third issue. I enjoyed this very much.

The nation is in terror! People are dying left and right! All of the people who are irredeemable are in peril and it seems as though Constantine is the one who can save them.

But is he going to?

He doesn’t seem to in his first scene in the book, which is both humorous and horrifying.

We get to see a conversation and a confrontation in a prison. Things get crazy. A lot of violence erupts. Some demons get loose and a lot of things happen all at once! Constantine has to then make a choice to be a savior or to be a bastard. Or can he just do both?

I very much liked the end of the issue. The rapture is happening and the stakes are high. I enjoyed how it is all wrapped up. It has been a harrowing few issues but they end it with class and they really make sure to stay true to Constantine’s character.

The writing is great but I have to also point out that Darick Robertson is doing awesome work on this as well. He is one of the best in the business and has been for a long time.

This has been a bit of a treat overall, and reminds you how Constantine should be treated in comics.

RATING: B+
