This issue is something else.
I have to say that this has been an entertaining and smart series thus far. This issue really cements the book as being one of the best new series out there.
It is quite affecting and it goes into some some dark places that I was not expecting. It certainly does not pull any punches.
This book takes place in a near future America where sadness is illegal.
Everyone must be happy all of the time otherwise it is a crime. Our two main characters, Kim and Jerry, start to fall victim to happiness. That is where the book falls down an incredibly dark rabbit hole.
We get to see them do the things a normal human would do.
Whether it’s having fast food or throwing up, they are blissfully happy. It is hurting them though and the inner pain that these characters feel starts to bubble to the surface. It does become a bit painful to read.
By the end of the book, we get to see Kim and Jerry getting rescued by an anti-happiness organization. Who are they? Are they evil as well? So many questions are raised. I honestly don’t know where they can take the book from here.
That’s a good thing. Peter Milligan writes another incredible script that is intense and thoughtful. The art by Michael Montenat is some of the best I have seen recently in comics.
This is a damn fine book that is relevant to today’s times. Recommended.
