‘Penultiman #3’ (review)

Written by Tom Peyer
Art by Alan Robinson
Published by Ahoy Comics

Writer Tom Peyer has done it again this fantastic book.

It is funny, smart and strangely poignant. He is writing a book here that is modern and relevant to today’s times. I love all of the books Ahoy has put out thus far, but this one probably has the clearest themes of all of them.

We see that Penultiman still has no confidence as this issue begins.

It is a very relatable thing for most readers, yet it is not seen often enough enough in superhero comics. He still isn’t sure about himself and his place in the universe. So, he turns to the place where many go when they feel as though they are lost.

That’s right. Penultiman turns to a self help book.

He is spiraling out of control, so why not? He find a book about positivity and takes it all of the things he learns from it. He takes those lessons he learns and start acting like a complete jerk in public. This leads to some truly hilarious scenes that turn emotional.

Meanwhile, his understudy named Antepenultiman is causing a bit of mischief.

He is determined to really put the screws to Penultiman. He just goes ahead and ruins Penultiman’s identity. Things get kind of dark. There is a hell of a twist and things lead to a heck of a cliffhanger.

This book is very well done. Peyer does a great job of writing a good script with strong characters. The artwork by Alan Robinson is extremely well done.

Overall, this is a strong comic that has a lot more going for it than the average comic book. Worth a look.

RATING: A
