I am loving the new Death Metal book but I have to say that I am enjoying the spinoffs even more.
They are bold looks at the DC Universe that take these familiar characters and do something new exciting with them. I am loving this direction and will be sad when this series ends.
This particular one shot focuses on a completely different version of Superman. It is the “Secret Origin” story that DC used to do but done in an entirely new fashion.
This issue focuses on the secret origin of Superboy Prime.
The beginning of the issue shows him as a young Clark Kent in more innocent times.
This section is drawn by Jerry Ordway and it is fun and sweet. We get to see Clark reading a comic book at a convenience store of the rack. We see that he is picked on by some local boys. We also get to see the lead up to him becoming the Superboy Prime persona. It is quite amazing.
There is a lovely scene where we get to see him talk to Krypto. That scene is beautifully drawn by Francis Manapul.
We get to see the entire issue lead up to Superboy Prime fighting against a demonic Batman. All of it ends in an unexpectedly nice way. I really enjoyed this.
Other artists on the book include the amazing Ryan Benjamin and Paul Pelletier. They all do a great job together. Scott Snyder and Geoff Johns write an incredible script too and it is a perfect Christmas gift from the entire creative team.
Well done overall.
