This latest storyline felt completely generic to me. It really feels like it is time for a new creative team.
James Tynion IV writes this book like he ran out of story 8 issues ago and is constantly trying to find a new direction.
This one here isn’t really didn’t work too well but man, did he ever try to push it.
The Ghost-Maker is the “villain” of this book.
Apparently, years ago when Batman first started out, this guy was around. They sort of trained together but eventually the two of them had a falling out. This led to them being sort of “crimefighters” in different cities.
But this Ghost-Maker has helped out a lot of cities over the years.
Now, he has set his sights on Gotham City and it is time to remove the Batman, in his eyes. This leads to a battle royale in this issue. It should be very exciting.
Sadly, it is anything but.
The main problem is that the Ghost-maker character is completely dull. He is rather undefined so it made it hard for me to care about the overall threat. Moreover, he has it in for the Clownhunter, who is one of the more annoying characters in years. This Clownhunter has it in for Harley Quinn as this issue starts off, but the whole thing is a mess that can’t drag itself up.
The resolution to the story is quick and feels completely unearned. It leaves off on a rather dull note. Hopefully, the upcoming event “Future State” livens things up.
I was as bored as can be as I hit the final pages of this book. Let’s hope for something better in 2021!
