‘Action Comics #1028’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by John Romita Jr.
Published by DC Comics

This is the end of the Brian Michael Bendis Superman era.

It does indeed go out with a whimper. This has been one of the most trying comic book runs in years to muddle through.

Finally, some relief is in sight by the end of this tepid issue.

This issue is basically the epilogue of the House of El storyline.

The story was just one of the most anticlimactic Superman stories every told. So, Bendis does his usual thing when ending his run on a title by trying to quiet things down and make something funny and poignant.

It actually falls super flat as it isn’t earned.

We learn what happens to the Metropolis underworld and where Bendis places them. But I didn’t care about any of them so it felt like a waste. Then, we see Bendis trying to have his last say on all of the characters he worked on.

Every single character Bendis has touched during his run here shows up.

And he tries to wrap up his stories in a very aggressive and forced manner. None of it feels natural. Even when the Legion of Superheroes shows up it feels shoehorned in. There is a lot of emotion and none of it is earned.

The art is decent enough. I do hope that John Romita Jr. and inker Klaus Janson find something more suited to their talents. Same for Bendis. He is a good writer that needs to not try to do everything in his comics.

Hopefully, they all find that right project soon.
