‘John Constantine: Hellblazer #9’ (review)

Written by Simon Spurrier
Art by Matias Bergara
Published by DC Comics

It is a shame that this series is coming to an end in a few issues. They finally have gotten the character of John Constantine right again after a really long time. It has been a nice treat to say the least, and I have been enjoying it very much.

The opening scene has John Constantine in a pub.

A person comes into the pub. At first, Constantine doesn’t appear interested in talking to him. As things get going though, Constantine gets wrapped up his story.

The person turns out to be a disgraced royal. He has hatched a plan to recreate the most magical horse there every was. Sounds crazy, but Constantine figures out that this is a really bad thing. He goes out to stop this from happening and to bring the royal down.

Things get crazy quickly. This whole scheme leads to a last confrontation during a rainy night. This is one of the craziest climaxes of the year for sure.

All of the story elements come together and it is damn exciting.

The story is fast paced and out of it’s mind. The art is especially well done. Matias Bergara does a hell of a job here, and each page is pretty gorgeous.

I love this too because it is a self contained story that works on many different levels.

RATING: A-
