‘Frankenstein: Undone #2’ (review)

Written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie
Art by Ben Stenbeck
Published by Dark Horse Comics

Mike Mignola has made himself a nice corner over at Dark Horse Comics where he can do the things he loves.

Luckily, the thing he loves to do are horror fueled stories and they are pretty awesome to read.

He really has done It again with this title. It has all of the Mignola trademarks and it is pretty special by itself.

This book is the lead up series to Frankenstein Underground. We get to see Frankenstein still feeling guilty for his transgressions of the past. The images that artist Ben Stenbeck creates to demonstrate this guilt are pretty damn cool.

We don’t even need words to show just how deeply tortured Frankenstein is.

Frankenstein is headed North. He encounters a strange man who tells him that he will be journeying back to Europe soon. Then, he goes to sleep. He wakes up and fights a strange wolf. This whole scene is pretty ominous and is full of a strange kind of dread.

After this, Frankenstein joins up with a crew on a ship. They set out to sea and that’s when the issue gets horrifying. They land and Frankenstein leads the crew to a deadly place. The last scene particularly is pretty strong and leads into where we are headed in the next issue coming up.

This is a completely unique book in the marketplace.

If is also a pretty unique take on the Frankenstein mythos.

While it may not be a book for everyone,  there is a lot to like. It is a well written and well illustrated comic book that may be currently flying under the radar.

RATING: A-
