‘Harleen #3’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by Stjepan Sejic
Published by DC Comics

This is the conclusion of Stjepan Sejic’s miniseries. He has done a great job on both the writing and the artwork on this title. I am not the biggest Harley Quinn fan, but he really knocked this one out of the park. He decided to go in a very different direction and it has paid off in spades.

The beginning of this book has Harley sitting on the floor reflecting on the last couple of issues.  She especially thinks about the Joker and the crazy lure he has on her. She thinks about it and it both makes her happy and chills her to the bone.

Sejic really makes her facial expressions and body language perfect and emotional. They tell the story even without the dialogue. It’s pretty damn remarkable.

Harley asks herself “what is wrong with me?” She is making time with the Joker and her boss is starting to notice.

She can’t help herself, however. The Joker has wormed his way into her brain and she is obsessed with him. It gets very psychological and it goes places that I never expected that it would.

Though the art is beautiful and polished, the story itself is very well written as well.  Sejic doesn’t hold back. The result is an intelligent and rather deep story. Harley does encounter Two-Face. It is a pretty interesting scene that adds a little bit of context to Harley’s character.

The rest of the book is really just Harley and the Joker becoming closer and closer. I won’t spoil the ending but it is very well done. Sejic has created one hell of a book that will really pass the test of time. The writing and the art are tops. You can’t ask for more than that.

RATING: A
