SPECIAL EFFECTS COLLECTION

The Special Effects Collection includes four memorable films – Son of Kong, Mighty Joe Young, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, and Them! Stop-motion pioneer Willis O’Brien oversaw special effects on Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young with Ray Harryhausen serving in a junior capacity. Harryhausen, who adapted O’Brien’s techniques and was the lead on The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, went on to develop and create a form of stop-motion model animation eventually known as “Dynamation.” Harryhausen’s amazing body of work continues to inspire many of today’s special effects wizards.

Includes:

Son of Kong (1933): The showman who brought Kong to New York returns to Skull Island and finds Kong’s son, a spunky 12-footer with a winning personality and his dad’s awesome strength. The filmmakers who created King Kong kept the excitement going with this sequel, released the same year as the original. Robert Armstrong reprises the role of Carl Denham, and Helen Mack is the damsel in distress. The two rescue Kong Jr. from quicksand and get a devoted protector who defends them from fierce prehistoric monsters, including a giant cave bear. But when a mighty earthquake strikes, even the son of Kong may not be powerful enough to save them. Extras include trailer.

Mighty Joe Young (1949): The team behind King Kong reunited to create another towering ape: Mr. Joseph Young. The simian is shorter and the jokes tongue-in-cheekier, but the Oscar-winning Special Effects are just as Kong-sized. A slick nightclub owner (Robert Armstrong) discovers the giant ape frolicking in Africa as the beloved pet of a young girl (Terry Moore). He brings both to Hollywood as a floor show until some no-goods ply Joe with booze and the blitzed behemoth goes bonkers. Highlights include Armstrong’s henchmen trying to lasso Joe cowpoke style, Joe playing tug-of-war with musclemen and plenty of Joe-to-the-rescue action. Extras include commentary, featurettes, and trailer.

The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953): Near the Arctic Circle, an atomic bomb is detonated. This fearsome experiment disturbs the sleep of a giant rhedosaurus encased in ice for over 100 million years and sends it southward on a destructive, deadly rampage! The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was the first screen adaptation of a work by fantasy-fiction titan Ray Bradbury. It also marked the first time Ray Harryhausen had total control over special effects. He came up with a fantastic creature (constructed at full scale, all 50 tons of it) that swims down from the north to run amok through New York City before being conquered in a spectacular Coney Island roller-coaster finale. Extras include featurettes and trailer.

Them! (1954): Man has split the atom and ushered in a new era. But how could he know he would also create Them? This landmark movie about giant radiation-mutated ants boasts remarkable Oscar-nominated special effects. Them! begins in New Mexico with a child wandering in shock, a ransacked general store and a battered corpse full of enough formic acid to kill 20 men. It ends with an epic struggle in the 700 miles of storm drains under Los Angeles, where the insect hordes are beaten, though they spawned a generation of films about radioactive creatures. Some approximate the terror, but few have equaled the artistry of Them! Extras include featurette and trailer.

HAMMER HORROR CLASSICS COLLECTION, V.1

The quartet of classic horror films, featuring cinema monsters Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy, represent classic examples from Hammer Film Productions. Founded in 1934, the British company became best known for a series of gothic horror films and a leader among English filmmakers that dominated the international horror film market from the mid-1950s through the early 1970s.  Extras on each title include the theatrical trailer.

Includes:

The Mummy (1959):
A vivid Technicolor reincarnation of The Mummy!  While on a dig in Egypt, British archaeologist John Banning (Peter Cushing) desecrates the tomb of Princess Ananka, awakening her mummified lover, Kharis (Christopher Lee). With revenge on his mind, the tormented mummy follows Banning and the rest of his group back to England, but becomes quite taken with Banning’s wife (Yvonne Furneaux), who resembles the princess quite closely.

Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1968):  When a young girl is found hanging in the local church with fang marks in her neck, the townsfolk immediately suspect Dracula (Christopher Lee) is behind the evil deed. Although he has supposedly been dead for quite some time, the vile vampire is the prime suspect. The Monsignor (Rupert Davies) is called in to exorcise the local castle where Dracula once lived.  In his third incarnation as Bram Stoker’s infamous vampire, horror great and 55-year movie veteran Lee goes fang to cross with the forces of good in this atmospheric Hammer Studios film directed with stylish menace by two-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer Freddie Francis.

Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed! (1969): Baron Frankenstein’s (Peter Cushing) experiment went wrong, dead wrong. Thus, another victim lies in a makeshift grave. Suddenly, a water main bursts, forcing the dead man’s arm to the surface. Next, the torrent heaves the body upward. Frankenstein’s panicked accomplice tries to conceal the body, but corpses can be so unwieldy.

This creepy scene is a highlight of Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed!, horror great Peter Cushings fifth Hammer Studios Frankenstein saga. Other cast members of note include film-debuting Simon Ward (Young Winston) and Freddie Jones (The Elephant Man) as the scientists pitiable new creation. This was director Terence Fisher’s favorite film, and his pacing and composition have rarely been better.

Taste The Blood of Dracula (1970): The fourth film in Hammer Studios cycle of hemogobbling Victorian-era horror is a showcase of why Hammer became the name in Gothic terror. The solid cast and rich production design raise goosebumps of real-life fear and otherworld dread. And Christopher Lee dons his red-lined cape again to become Evil Incarnate. He’s Count Dracula, a being neither dead nor alivwe, who returns to menacing life after three middle-aged swingers decide to dabble in black magic to bolster their sagging sex lives. Dracula is reborn when the trio’s blood-drinking rituals lead to the destruction of his devil-worshipping colleague Lord Courtley (Ralph Bates), whereupon the Count unleashes his deadly wrath on those responsible, even involving members of their families in his scheme of revenge, which culminates in a dramatic finale in a recently reconstructed cathedral. Fine direction from Hammer regular Peter Sasdy.

CALIFORNICATION: THE COMPLETE SERIES

There’s only one thing Hank Moody can’t resist: temptation. In the complete 7-season set of Californication, Golden Globe winner David Duchovny stars as a troubled writer addicted to a rock star life. Even with long-time love Karen (Natascha McElhone), rebellious daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin) and best friend/agent Charlie (Evan Handler) by his side, Hank’s demons catch up to him. With witty candor and raw magnetism, his choices land him in a world of hot water and steamy adventure.

Season One: David Duchovny returns to television in a comedy series centering around one-hit wonder novelist Hank Moody, who struggles to help raise his 13-year-old daughter, while still carrying a torch for his ex-girlfriend Karen. Every day finds Hank in bed with another woman and two steps back from his ultimate goal: restoring his family. He wouldn’t mind to revive his writing career either, if only he could get over his massive case of writer’s block.

Season Two: This season, Hank and Karen will finally rekindle their long lost romance. But their road to love will hit a major snag when Hank’s new job as biography writer for a legendary music producer lands him waist-deep in his three favorite vices – sex, drugs, and rock & roll.

Season Three: This season, Hank Moody’s life, like the economy, is officially turned upside down. The lack of writing assignments forces him to get a “real” job as a college professor while trying to keep wild child Becca on the straight and narrow with Karen still working in New York. Can he learn to keep “regular” hours and inspire the next generation of scribes? First, he’ll have to stay on the right side of the dean of students, the dean’s wife and a teacher’s assistant who’s immune to his charms… Meanwhile, Charlie’s returned to the mainstream — he’s ditched the porn world for a job at a legitimate agency. His only problem is a boss/agency head who’s more interested in him than her clients (hello, Rick Springfield!). It would all be manageable with Marcy by his side, but she’s still bitter over his affair and is even back on the dating scene, which is further complicated since the two are platonically sharing the house – who can afford a divorce in a recession?

Season Four: A one-night misunderstanding has landed Hank Moody in serious hot water, but his troubles don’t end there. It seems like it’s the entire State of California vs. Hank Moody, and he’s not going to get off easy. With special guest star Rob Lowe and guest stars Carla Gugino, Michael Ealy, Zoë Kravitz and Tommy Lee.

Season Five: Hank Moody has become hip hop’s most wanted. Rich and powerful rap mogul extraordinaire Samurai Apocalypse (Wu-Tang’s RZA) is pimped-out famous – and hell bent on getting our bad boy writer into more trouble than he’s ever known.

Season Six: Moody continually struggles to be a good father to his college-aged daughter Becca, while still carrying a torch for her mother, and his ex-girlfriend, Karen. This season, noted actress Maggie Grace (Lost) has signed on for nine episodes as the infamous rock groupie Faith, who develops an unconventional relationship with Hank. She is joined in two episodes by her former Lost co-star Jorge Garcia as an old contact from Faith’s past. International comedy star Tim Minchin takes on the role of Atticus Fetch, a mad-as-a-hatter rock star who will write the music for the Broadway production of Hank’s hit novel. Fetch enlists the ever-cynical Hank to collaborate on the project, which he calls “…a rock opera about love conquering all.” Notorious rocker Marilyn Manson also makes a guest appearance.

Season Seven: He’s come a long way. After blowing every chance at love & happiness – and burning every bridge in Hollywood – Hank Moody is finally ready to put the past to bed. But as always, old indiscretions turn up to bite him squarely in the ass. Could it be too late to pull off a happy ending?

GAME OF THRONES: SEASON ONE STEELBOOK

Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; and all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords, and honest men…all will play the Game of Thrones.

The first season of the hit HBO original TV series, based on the bestselling book A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. An epic drama, Game of Thrones is set in the fantasy continent of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land where summers and winters can last for years. This adventure-fantasy series is now available in a 7-disc Blu-ray collection with these exclusive features: in-episode guide, historical Game of Thrones context, inside look at the creation of the battle of Blackwater Bay and audio commentaries with the cast and crew that includes Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Kit Harington. GAME OF THRONES: SEASON TWO STEELBOOK

Based on the bestselling book series by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is an epic drama set in the grounded fantasy continent of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land where summers and winters can last years. Season 2 plays out against the backdrop of a fast-approaching winter – the season of the white raven. In King’s Landing, the coveted Iron Throne is occupied by cruel young Joffrey, counseled by his conniving mother Cersei and uncle Tyrion, who has been appointed Hand of the King. But the Lannister hold on the Throne is under assault on many fronts. There’s Robb Stark, son of the slain Lord of Winterfell, Ned Stark, who seeks autonomy in the North and has taken Cersei’s brother Jaime prisoner in battle; Daenerys Targaryen, who looks to shore up her depleted power in the east through three newborn dragons; Stannis Baratheon, eldest brother of the late King Robert, who rejects Joffrey’s legitimacy and aligns with a powerful priestess to raise a naval attack; and Stannis’ brother Renly, who has maintained his own claim since fleeing King’s Landing. In the meantime, a new leader is rising among the wildlings North of the Wall, adding new perils for Jon Snow and the order of the Night’s Watch. With tensions and treaties, animosity and alliances, Season 2 of Game of Thrones promises to be a thrilling journey through a riveting, unforgettable fictional landscape.

With this new edition with Steelbook packaging, the Lannisters’ influence is keenly felt from the Iron Throne and their sigil is included on packaging set in King’s Landing, where the season’s pivotal Battle of the Blackwater occurs. Also this release is the first TV on Blu-ray title to be released with the revolutionary new audio technology Dolby Atmos. The Blu-ray features a newly remixed Dolby Atmos soundtrack, which places and moves sounds and music anywhere in the room, including overhead, creating a captivating experience that brings entertainment alive all around the audience.

It’s not just a job—it’s a hilarious complete series collection!

Climb aboard the PT-73 and set a course for classic television comedy with McHale’s Navy: The Complete Series, a 138-episode voyage of military mirth and madness. With an amazing cast, including Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine, comic genius Tim Conway, and the indisputable brilliance of Joe Flynn, McHale’s Navy was a mainstay of television viewing throughout its original network run from 1962-1966 and an unsinkable juggernaut in reruns for decades to come.

In the Pacific Theater of WWII, veteran seaman Quinton McHale (Borgnine) is commissioned into the Navy Reserve and named skipper of the Torpedo Patrol (PT) Boat #73. Along with his crew of good-hearted swabbies who love to have fun, McHale is a constant thorn in the side of his base commander, Captain Wallace B. Binghamton (Flynn). Binghamton is forever trying to find a way to get rid of McHale and his rule-bending crew, while McHale and company are forever scheming to keep him from succeeding. It all adds up to the wackiest tour-of-duty television has ever seen!

Guest stars included Mako, Bil Quinn, Stanley Adams, Ted Knight, Henry Corden, Gary Owens, George Kennedy, Don Knotts, Marlo Thomas, Allan Melvin, Raquel Welch, Kent McCord, Marvin Kaplan, Mike Farrell, Sue Ane Langdon, Pat Harrington Jr., Bernie Kopell, Yvonne Craig, and Arte Johnson.  Featuring sharp writing and an indelible supporting cast, including Carl Ballantine and Gavin MacLeod, McHale’s Navy is classic television at its finest – and funniest.

Also includes a cast and crew reunion, featurettes and feature films McHale’s Navy (1964) and McHale’s Navy Joins The Air Force (1965)!
