2014 FOG! Holiday Gift Guide: Original Art, Gifts & Crafts

Some people might scoff at giving someone art…or crafts…or something in-between, as a gift, especially since these kind of presents are what you would call “subjective”. But in the case of the following holiday picks, anyone who loves pop culture would be overjoyed to own one of these babies…and if they don’t, well, ask for it back.

It’ll probably look better on your wall anyway.

Olive Waits by Sandy MacDonald

This
sweet little print (just 8.5 x 11) of Olive Oyl is part of Sandy
MacDonald’s toy portrait series and is just about the cutest thing I
have ever seen.

Give it to anyone who is in need of some serious adorableness in their life.

Batteries Not Included Series

Hello old friends, it’s so nice to see you all again *wipes away tears*.

For those people on your list who are over a certain demographic age and can remember what it was like to own a TV without a remote control, this series of 16 x 24 prints will no doubt bring back some glorious memories of what they used to do to pass the time.

If you’re wondering just what kind of person would become overwhelmed just by looking at these prints, you only have to say two words out loud while in any group of people…

Little Professor…the ones who turn around and begin crying are your target audience.

 Octopus Sculpture

For the budding Teuthologist (someone who studies cephalopods) on your list, why not invest in a gift that fully supports their nature nerdity while at this same time is a work of art that they will keep for a lifetime. Say this incredible life-like resin and acrylic sculpture of an octopus in a box.

Sure, it might wig out a few family members at first but when your gift recipient ends up hosting a Discovery Channel show all about the wonders of the octopi, they’ll all remember whose responsible for planting that seed in the first place.

You.

It’s great to be so awesome isn’t it?

Slimer Glow-in-the-Dark Holiday Ornament

Sure, a gluttonous ghost glowing eerily from your holiday tree might not say “Xmas” to certain people, but to a Ghostbuster fanatic, nothing could be further from the truth…after-all Bill Murray was in Ghostbusters (which dealt with the dearly departed) AND he was in Scrooged (which also dealt with dead people) so see, Slimer is, in fact, a holiday character (as connected by Bill Murray).

I think I proved that point quite nicely.

ThunderSeuss

Do you love Dr. Seuss? Do you also love the Thundercats? Do you wish someone would put these two things together so that your love could be mashed together like a delicious cartoon version of a Nutella and Peanut Butter sandwich?

Well, they have.

Choose one of five different 5 x 7 prints (or buy all of them if your love is similar to shame eating) and enjoy the beauty of two universes coming together…just as ThunderSeuss intended.

Keep Fresh Stay Rad Postcard Box

If you have a typography nut on your holiday list this year, this collection of 100 postcards by the design collective Friends of Type will certainly be right up their alley. Separated into sections (birthday, holiday, pop culture) and featuring cutting-edge designs, anyone obsessed with type will be thanking you profusely for the year to come…probably by sending you one of these cards.

You know, if they don’t horde them for just themselves.

Twerking Einstein Sculpture

Don’t ask yourself why you would give this to someone…ask, how could you not?

Rich Pellegrino: Burning Utica: Madge

As an Office fan, I would love this portrait of Jim (from the season four episode “Branch Wars”) dressed in a Madge’s uniform. And by love, I mean I would hang it above my bed on the ceiling so that I could stare at it until I fell asleep, dreaming about Karen Filippelli trying to poach Stanley Hudson away from the Scranton branch.

Why?

Because that’s how all Office freaks roll.

Rich Pellegrino: Burning Utica: Kent

Same story but with Michael Scott…this is the gift that keeps on giving.

Chico’s Bail Bonds, Proud Sponsor of…  by Dave Perillo

A seriously cool, old-school print featuring the Original bad-asses of little league, The Bad News Bears. Now, we’re talking the 1976 version here, which not only had some of the richest, most awesome, most foul-mouthed, chain-smoking kids ever to appear on film, it also gave little girls hope that one day, they too could lead a bunch of boys to the championship game.

Yeah, that film totally rocked.

Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman: Better, Stronger, Faster

If you want to describe just how much fun watching both The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman was to anyone too young to appreciate it, just buy them this 18 x 22 print of Jaime Sommers and Steve Austin (along with their dog Max) fighting Fembots, Bigfoot, Goldman the Maskatron, Venus Death Probe and Alex and Jaime’s evil twin, Lisa Galloway as proof of how crazy 70s TV really was.

Because yeah, all these things really happened on Prime Time and we loved it.

Prophecy of Lo Pan by YJ Lee

In the last few years, John Carpenter’s film Big Trouble In Little China has taken hold of the internet with all manners of odes (magnets, crocheted dolls, quilts, you name it) but in YJ Lee’s awesome homage to the man with the plan, Lo Pan (along with his Shorties With the Green Eyes: Miao Yin and Gracie Law) you get a pretty classy, fine art print of the crazed Sorcerer for once.

Which is kinda nice for the guy who hasn’t been able to become corporeal for a bunch of centuries.

No Wonder You’re Extinct by Kevin M Wilson

With Jurassic World booting up the old dinosaur franchise next year, let’s pay our respects to one of the all-time great death scenes from the original, you know which one I’m talking about, Newman getting his just desserts via a Dilophosaurus.

*slow clap*

Now that was an awesome way to go.

Star Wars Spaghetti Western Print Set

The original trilogy are given the Spaghetti Western treatment in this amazing set of beautifully done 20 x 30 prints.

These babies are going to look favoloso over your couch, bar or collection of Star Wars goodies…or, you could give them to a Star Wars Nerd for the holidays…either way, someone is going to be very felice.

Freddie Mercury Poster by Oip Kutukafa

For the Queen fan who is just a bit quirky in their tastes…is it me or has Freddy has never looked so adorable?

Raiders of the Lost Ark – Retro Movie Poster

Raiders of the Lost Ark was set in 1936 so it seems only fitting that the movie poster gets a nice retro style that mirrors its time and place.

Also, it doesn’t hurt that Indy looks like the super old-school romantic lead here….mmmmm….Indiana Jones, I wish I could quit you (especially after Crystal Skull).

Jaws by Andy Fairhurst

I’ve seen a lot of interpretations of the Jaws movie poster over the years but nothing comes close (not even the original, at least for me) to portraying the absolute fright that this movie gave the audience than Andy Fairhurst’s incredible art.

If that’s tall praise, good, because this gallery worthy 17 x 21 Giclée print not only breathes new life into what has become a stale trend, it is by far the most capable of conveying absolute and utter terror that I have ever seen.

Buy it now!

Party Animal by Brandon Bird

In this tongue-in-cheek (literally) print of Hannibal Lecter attending a party, you sort of get the impression that you better show him a good time or else you might end up as dip at his next get together.

A wonderful warning to that one person on your gift list whose parties are always less than fun.

Goggle Kids by Farel Dalrymple

If you are a fan of comic artist Farel Dalrymple (Omega the Unknown with Jonathan Lethem and Pop Gun War) or need a gift for someone who is, look no further than this whimsical glow-in-the-dark 22 x 30 print of a couple of kids playing around with goggles.

Perfect for an office or, better yet, a kid’s room where the kiddos can learn to appreciate the comic art form and become just as big of a dork as their parents.

You gotta get ’em trained while they’re young right?
